This is a game that can be played alone or with a partner. It is inherently competitive, although students can choose their level of competition. They can compete with themselves (trying to beat their own time), with a buddy, or with a small group. This system works well for those kiddos that need a little more fun motivation to get them practicing! Here’s how you play:
- Choose a set for practice
- Lay all the cards face down
- On a countdown of 1,2,3…go, flip them all up and make piles of matching cards. For example 3 x 7, 7 x 3 and 21 all end up in a pile together.
- When done, students check that they matched everything up together correctly using an answer key. Print out a set for every student. They can keep them in their binders/duotangs and resuse them: Multiplication fast match answer pages
I recommend laminating sets if you can. If not, student can cut and keep their own sets. Tip: make each set a different colour for easier tracking:
- Multiplication fast match the twos
- Multiplication fast match the threes
- Multiplication fast match the fours
- Multiplication fast match the fives
- Multiplication fast match the sixes
- Multiplication fast match the sevens
- Multiplication fast match the eights
- Multiplication fast match the nines
- Multiplication fast match the tens
- Multiplication fast match the elevens
- Multiplication fast match the twelves
The elevens and twelves are not necessary, but I have them just in case you have a student who would like them.
